Winter on the farm
We get asked often what we do in the winter.
With snow on the ground, it is easy to assume that there’s just not a lot going on on the farm.
In reality we are very busy during winter! First, there are many admin tasks to get on top of that we fall behind on during the intensity of fall harvest - book-keeping mainly. Then there is crop-planning, organic certification, securing seasonal labour, keeping up to date with records, coursework (gotta stay on top of things!), market applications, payroll and income taxes to keep up with. In addition, we spend time each week preparing vegetables for market.
Each Saturday we attend the Old Strathcona Farmers Market - this in itself keeps us busy!
Then there are tractors and equipment that require maintenance and repair. And before we know it, we are ready to fire up the greenhouse and begin planting by the end of February.
So, you see winters fly by! We do enjoy more leisure time for sure and we like to watch our kids play sports, spend more time with family, build puzzles, play games and take the odd trip, but it’s definitely not a work-all-summer-play-all-winter situation around here;)
